The South Asian Heart Research (SAHR) is proud to celebrate outstanding contributions to cardiovascular and related research, innovation, and leadership through our prestigious awards. The SAHR Awards Committee oversees the selection of distinguished scholars who have made significant accomplishments in various aspects in alignment with the broader SAHR mission.
Chair: Charles Thodeti, Ph.D., FAHA, FCVS
Dr. Charles Thodeti is a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Toledo. He earned his Ph.D. in Zoology from S.V. University, India, followed by post-doctoral training at Lund University, Sweden. Later, he held a research faculty position at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark followed by an Instructor and Staff Scientist position at the Harvard Medical School/Boston Children's Hospital. Before moving to Toledo, he served as a tenured Associate Professor at Northeast Ohio Medical University. His laboratory focuses on mechanotransduction mechanisms in cardiac remodeling and pathological angiogenesis, with research supported by NIH and AHA grants. He has published numerous peer-reviewed publications, serves in prestigious grant study sections, and has a long history of serving in various leadership roles in the American Heart Association, American Physiological Society, Association of Scientists of Indian Origin in America, etc.
Vice Chair: Dr. Sakthivel Sadayappan, Ph.D., FAHA, MBA
Dr. Sakthivel Sadayappan serves as the Professor and Department Head of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Arizona. He also serves as the Associate Director, Sarver Heart Center and Czarina M. & Humberto S. Lopez Endowed Chair. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Madurai Kamaraj University, India followed by post-doctoral training at Max-Planck Institute, Germany and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Ohio. Subsequently, he became a faculty in Loyola University Chicago and then in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. His research focuses on improving cardiac health including those of South Asians, aiming to treat and prevent genetically induced heart failure such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, and dilated cardiomyopathy. In recent years, he has expanded his studies to include skeletal muscle genetic diseases such as distal arthrogryposis and Lethal Congenital Contracture Syndrome. His lab employs various models and techniques, including iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and organoids, genetically engineered mouse models, gene editing therapies, etc. with research supported by NIH and AHA grants. He also actively collaborates with pharmaceutical companies to develop treatments for heart failure. Dr. Sadayappan has published numerous peer-reviewed publications, serves in prestigious grant study sections, and has a long history of serving in various leadership roles in the American Heart Association, American Physiological Society, International Society for Heart Research, Cardiac Muscle Society, etc. He was a Past-President of the Society for South Asian Heart Research.

This award recognizes emerging investigators with an Assistant Professor position or equivalent who have demonstrated exceptional promise in research and have the potential to become future leaders in their field.

4. SAHR Distinguished Leader Award (Senior Professor Level)
The most prestigious honor, this award is presented to those at a Senior Professor level who have not only led groundbreaking research but have also made exemplary contributions to the Cardiovascular field, preferably South Asian.
